Mentoring and Coaching

Over my entire career I have received informal requests from colleagues for professional advice and help and I have been only too pleased to create time to listen and provide advice. This began to be more formalized in a program with the Association of British Orchestras, UK back in the 1990s after which I became involved with a number of managers and artists wanting this type of reflective practice. At New England Conservatory I mentored students as part of the Sistema Fellows program and more recently I have continued this at Berklee Valencia, where I am Visiting Professor, with members of Faculty as part of their Professional Development Program. The most important part of mentoring or coaching is the ability to listen and then reflect what you have heard asking open questions that allow the mentee to become involved in a creative conversation.
